Chateau Fonréaud #bdx10

The blind tasting for Margaux and the Médoc was held at Chateau Fonréaud, a Chateau which straddles the Listrac-Médoc and the Moulis-en-Médoc appellations. 35 hectares are in Listrac and another 6 are in Moulis (there are 3 additional hectares of white grapes). The estate has a total of 45 hectares and at 43 meters above sea-level it is the highest point in the Médoc.

The break down of the planted reds is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. The planted whites are 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 15% Muscadelle.

The estate is run by Jean and Marie-Hélène CHANFREAU, the Chateau has been in the family since it was purchased by Léo CHANFREAU in 1962.

Fermentation is done in concrete tanks, they use cold maceration to keep more freshness in the fruit. After maceration they let the temperature slowly rise over a period of three days and fermentation continues in the tanks for a month. They pump the wine 3-4 times a day.

They use for different coopers for their barrels and rotate 1/3 of their barrels each year.

In addition to their famous red wines, they have been producing their white wine for 20 years. The grapes are pressed quickly after harvest and fermentation is done in the barrels, using 50% new oak.

As for 2010, Jean CHANFREAU says he expects it to be an excellent vintage. He said there was lots of concentration in the fruit, with a small yield of 35 hl/ha.
