Black Ankle "Slate" Wins Best in Show at Maryland Governor's Cup

The Maryland Wineries Association sent out the following announcement:
Black Ankle Vineyards Slate was named Maryland’s top wine at the 2011 Maryland Governor’s Cup Wine Competition. In addition to this “Best in Show” honor, Black Ankle Vineyards won Best White Blend for their 2011 Bedlam. Twelve wines from around the state were named “Best in Class” in their respective categories, joining 19 wines winning gold medals, 39 silver medalists and 46 bronze medal winners.

"This is a wine we will only make every few years, so when this one is gone, it will be a while before we make another one," said Ed Boyce, co-owner of Black Ankle Vineyards, with winemaker, and wife, Sarah O'Herron. "We are delighted to win the Governors Cup for the third time, especially at a time when Maryland wines are proving that we can grow world-class wines in the Old Line State.”

"The Governor's Cup Wine Competition is an annual tradition that brings quality wines of Maryland together in one place," said Al Spoler, competition director and host of WYPR's Cellar Notes. "It's exciting to see so many new wineries entering wines for the first time. In fact, some of the best efforts were from very young wineries."

“The quality of the wines submitted in this competition was outstanding,” said Maryland Wineries Association Executive Director, Kevin Atticks. “We had many more submissions than in years past, and our team of judges was clearly quite impressed.”

The Annual Maryland Governor’s Cup Competition is the premier competition of Maryland wines, evaluated by judges from the retail, wholesale, restaurant segments of our industry, as well as media and consumer judges. The competition is blind – judges only know the composition of the wine, and not the label, price, intended market or any other details. All wines submitted are Maryland-appellation.

Congratulations to all of the winners!
