Bordeaux is an interesting contrast. Because of the concentration of great wine estates in a relatively small region it attracts visitors from around the world, but navigating the Bordeaux wine tourism process can be difficult, especially for Americans.
It is true, there are some great wine tours through the Bordeaux Tourism Office. But outside of that, contacting Chateau and arranging visits can be a daunting task, especially if you have never been to Bordeaux before.
Don't get me wrong the Bordelais are some of the most warm and welcoming people I have ever met, in any country. It is simply a matter of understanding their system.
That is why I was excited to receive this press release from Chateau Troplong Mondot:
We are very keen to open Chateau Troplong Mondot for wine tourism. In the summer of 2010, we opened the "Les Belles Perdrix". This guest house and rooms are in the heart of the vineyard and are open for bed and breakfast throughout the year.
In 2011 saw the arrival of our new Chef, which with our recently refurbished
reception room, not only allows us to organise lunches and dinners to taste our
wines but also events such as weddings, seminars, cocktails, etc.
And of course it is possible to visit the estate followed by a tasting, but only by
appointment, each week day.

Chateau Troplong Mondot is a Classified First Growth in the Saint-Émilion region. Like all of the First Growths, the property is beautiful and the opportunity to stay there is a rare one. But to be able to stay there and have a meal specially prepared to pair with the wines from the Chateau and sourced from local farms is a real treat. It is also an example of coming up with innovative tourism strategies in Bordeaux.
